Vowels

Pure Vowels

We will use English words for the sounds we will explore.

Before we start, there are two classes of pure vowel sounds.  Some are created with the tongue rising in the back of the mouth and are called back vowels.

From the highest tongue position to the lowest, these are the back vowels:

Boots look funny, Father thought.

As you say the sentence above, pay attention to your tongue going lower with each new vowel sound.

You an read the sentence backwards and feel the opposite happen, as the tongue rises.

From the highest tongue position to the lowest, these are the front vowels:

Eat it, get fat.   OR Eat this red apple.

As we go through voice training, we will refer to these for if and when we wish to alter vowels to take some pressure off the voice or to make the tone sound better.

Diphthongs

Di- means 2.  Dihydrogen oxide is two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen and we call that water; burnt hydrogen.

Diphthongs are vowels made from two pure vowels, connected in sequence with no space between.

Diphthongs are vowels in the following words:

Bright

How

Ate

Oil

The way they are sung is something to discover in a lesson and then you must practice them.  There is a technique for diphthongs.
